While I was walking in the south of Bangladesh looking for a story, I met by accident with two rice scientists from the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. They were travelling through the coastal area to visit projects. I asked them if I could join them for a few days and they accepted.
This video is talking about the increasing salinity of the land in the coastal area of Bangladesh (due to climate change) and how to solve the situation. Because of the salinity farmers cannot grow rice anymore so they switch to shrimp culture. Unfortunately breeding shrimps require salt water so farmer introduce it in their field making the situation worst. The work of BRRI is to develop rice varieties that can grow in saline arias so farmers don’t have to cultivate shrimps to survive.
See you next week!
